The concept of Buddhahood evolves through Theravāda, Mahāyāna, and Tantric Buddhism. Initially, early texts depict the Buddha as a unique, enlightened human, focusing on His mental qualities and physical traits. The second stage sees detailed descriptions of His 32 physical marks and attributes like “Tathāgata” signifying His transcendence. In the third stage, the Buddha’s previous lives and the bodhisattva ideal become central, with Mahāyāna introducing concepts like Trikāya and multiple Buddhas, while Theravāda emphasizes relic worship and spiritual virtues. Both traditions integrate faith and devotion, highlighting the Buddha’s evolving role from historical figure to a transcendent, superhuman being.
