From The Living Fountains Of Buddhism
The Buddhist monks who lived and practiced their religion in Sri Lanka in the late 19th and early 20th centuries played a tremendous role in helping Western scholars popularize Buddhism in the West. Nonetheless, the part they played was not fully, or in some cases even partially, acknowledged by those scholars who depended on them to unravel the meaning of the abstruse and recondite doctrines of Buddhism. Their role remained hidden and unappreciated. Dr. Guruge, in this treatise, reveals the enormous contribution made by some of the prominent Buddhist monks of Sri Lanka. Among them are Ven. Waskaduwe Subhuti, Ven. Hikkaduwe Sumangala, and Ven. Polwatte Buddhadatta Thero. There are many more prelates whose guidance was sought avidly by the Western scholars who wrote about Buddhism. Dr. Ananda W. P. Guruge, in this epoch-making treatise, reveals the hidden role played by these Buddhist monks who were then the living fountains of Buddhism.
