'කල්‍යාණි ශීලා ලිපි' මෙම කෘතිය අම්බලම්ගොඩ පොල්වත්තේ ශ්‍රි බුධදත්ත සථවිරපාදයන් වහන්සේ විසින් සම්පාදිත කෘතියකි. මෙම ශිලා ලිපිය පසළොස් වන සියවසේ බුරුම දේශයෙහි ගංගාවතී නුවර පිහිටවූ ශිලා ලේඛනයක මුද්‍රිත පිටපතය. මෙය සමකාලීන බෞද්ධ රාජධානි අතර පැවති සම්බන්ධතා හෙළි කරන ලේඛනයක් මෙන්ම ශාසන ඉතිහාසය සම්බන්ධ වැදගත් මූලාශ්‍රයක්ද වේ.

පේරාදෙණිය විශ්ව විද්‍යාලයේ ඉතිහාස අධ්‍යයන අංශයේ කථිකාචාර්ය වරියක්  ලෙස සේවය කරන දකුණු ආසියානු කලාපයේ ඉතිහාසය පිළිබද පර්යේෂණ කටයුතුවල නිරතව සිටින ශාස්ත්‍රවේදිනියක වන ආචාර්ය සුමුදු මනෝරී ධර්මරත්න මහත්මිය විසින් රචනා කරන ලද 'ශ්‍රී ලංකාව  සහ පල්ලව දේශය' මෙම කෘතිය අධ්‍යයනය කිරීම තුළින් ශ්‍රි ලංකාව සහ දකුණු ඉන්දියාව අතර මානව සබදතාවල ආරම්භයත් එසේම මුල්ම ජනාවාස බිහි වූ අවධිය වැනි ඉතා ඈත ඉතිහාසය පිලිබදවත්.

පැරණි කලාශිල්ප පිළිබද පොතපත කියවීමෙහිත් ශිල්ප කෘතීන් පිරික්සීමෙහිත් කුඩා කල සිට මා තුළ පැවති ආශාව මේ පොත ලිවීමෙහි මා මෙහෙය විය. භාරතීය බෞද්ධ කලාවේ උපත. පරිණාමය සහ පැතිරීම පිළිබද විචාරණාත්මක විස්තරයක් මේ පොතෙහි අන්තර්ගත වෙයි. මෙහි සදහන් නොයෙක් අදහස් අද මෙරට බෞද්ධ සමාජය පිළිගත් ඒවාට විරුද්ධ විය හැකිය. එහෙත් පර්යේෂකයා සිය නිවහල් හැගීම නො පැකිලි ප්‍රකාශ කළ යුතු වෙයි. 

'මැදරට ඓතිහාසික විහාරස්ථාන' නමැති මෙම ග්‍රන්ථය නූතන මධ්‍යම පළාතේ දිස්ත්‍රික්ක තුනෙහි ඓතිහාසික වශයෙන් වැදගත්, පූජනීය වූ රජමහා විහාර හා පුරාණ විහාරස්ථාන සම්බන්ධයෙන් වැදගත් කරුණු අනාවරණය කරන කෘතියක් ලෙස පෙන්වාදිය හැකිය.

"කන්ද උඩරට ජනප්‍රිය වූ දේව සංකල්ප හා ඓතිහාසික දේවාල ' නමැති මෙම ග්‍රන්ථය නූතන මධ්‍යම පළාතේ දිස්ත්‍රික්ක තුනෙහි ජනප්‍රිය වූ දේව සංකල්ප හා ඓතිහාසික වශයෙන් වැදගත්, පූජනීය වූ සතර මහා දේවාල හා අනෙකුත් දේවාල සම්බන්ධයෙන් වැදගත් කරුණු අනාවරණය කරන කෘතියකි.

"ථෙරවාදී ත්‍රිපිටකයේ සමාරම්භය හා විකාශය” යන මෙම කෘතිය ත්‍රිපිටක සාහිත්‍යය ආරම්භව, වර්ධනය වී ශ්‍රී ලංකාවෙහි හා සෙසු සම්ප්‍රදායික ථෙරවාද බෞද්ධ ලෝකයෙහි ද ව්‍යාප්තව පවත්නා ආකාරය පිළිබඳ සමාලෝචනාත්මක අධ්‍යයනයකි. සාහිත්‍යය, ධර්ම කරුණු සහ ඉතිහාසය ද සංකලනය කරමින් රචනා කොට ඇති මෙම කෘතිය ත්‍රිපිටක සාහිත්‍යය පිළිබඳව දැන ගනු කැමැති ධර්මකාමී සාමාන්‍ය පාඨකයා හට මෙන් ම ත්‍රිපිටකය පිළිබඳව ගැඹුරින් හදාරනු කැමති ශාස්ත්‍රාභිලාෂීන්හට ද එක සේ අර්ථවත් වන කෘතියක් ලෙස හැඳින්විය හැකිය. 

මෑත ශ්‍රී ලංකා ඉතිහාසයට මහත් බලපෑමක් සිදු කළ මේ පොත ලියැවුණේ 1946 දී ය. මේ පොත, එතෙක් යටත්විජිත පාලනය තුළ වසර 400ක පමණ කාලයක් සමාජ දේශපාලන ක්‍රියාවලියෙන් පිටමං කොට තිබූ භික්ෂු සංඝය, නැවත එම අවකාශයට ප්‍රවේශ වීම වැළැක්වීම සඳහා මහත් ප්‍රයත්නයක් දැරූ ප්‍රභූ පංතියකට ලබා දෙන ලද පිළිතුරයි. යටත්විජිත පාලන කාලයක අභියෝග ජයගැනීමට ලියැවුණු මේ කෘතිය, අද ඔබ කියවන්නේ යටත්විජිත තත්වයෙන් මිදුණු රටක සිට ය. එදා පීඩිතයාගේ ආගමක් වූ බුද්ධාගම අද තව දුරටත් පීඩිතයාගේ ආගමක් නොවේ. එය රාජ්‍ය බලය හොබවන්නාගේ ආගමයි. එහෙයින් මෙම කාල අතර වෙනස පිළිබඳ අවබෝධයෙන් යුතුව මේ පොත කියැවිය යුතු ය. 
වෙනස් අවධියක ලියැවුණු කෘතියක් ඊට සැලකිය යුතු තරම් වෙනස් වූ අවධියක සිට කියවන විට මතුවන අභියෝග මොනවා දැයි හැදෑරීමට ද, එහි දී පාඨකයා තුළ ඇතිකර ගතයුතු සංයමය පිළිබඳ හැදෑරීමට ද, මෙම කෘතිය අත්පොතක් ලෙස භාවිතා කළ හැකිය. 

" ත්‍රිපිටක ධර්මය අර්ථ කථා, ටීකා සහිත ව හදාරා ධර්මය, විනය, පාලි භාෂාව පිළිබද හසල අවබෝධයක් ඇත්තා වූ අගනා ධර්ම ග්‍රන්ථ රාශියක් සම්පාදනය කළ කෘතහස්ත ග්‍රන්ථ කර්තෘවරයෙක් වන සත්ගුණවත් ගයාගේ වානුක විදානපතිරණ මහත්මයා විසින් ශ්‍රී මහා බෝධීන් වහන්සේ සම්බන්ධ ව දීර්ඝ විස්තර වර්ණනා සහිත ව සම්පාදිත මෙම ග්‍රන්ථයෙහි අගය, වටිනාකම අසීමත ය.

නිර්වාණ ගාමිත්වය කෙරෙහි ආදි බෞද්ධ සම්ප්‍රදාය දැක් වූ අවධානයත් එමෙන් ම පුද පුජා කෙරෙහි දැක් වූ අල්ප අවධානයත් සැලකිල්ලට ගෙන එය හුදු නිර්වාණගාමී ප්‍රතිපදාවක් පමණක් ම යැයි නම් කිරීම නිවැරදි නොවේ. පුද පූජා චාරිත්‍ර විධි වලින් තොර වූ දාර්ශනික යුගයක් බෞද්ධ සම්ප්‍රදාය තුළ පැවති බවට ඇතැම් දෙනා විශ්වාස කළත් එය බෞද්ධ ඉතිහාසය තුළ සත්‍ය වශයෙන් විද්‍යමාන වූ අවස්ථාවකට වඩා බුද්ධිවාදීත්වය පදනම් කරගත් නූතන මානසිකත්වය විසින් බෞද්ධ සම්ප්‍රදාය වෙත ආරෝපණය කරන ලද්දක් සේ සැලකීම යුක්ති යුක්තය. මෙම අදහස ස්ඵුට කිරීමට නිලන්ත දිසානායක මහතාගේ මෙකී ශාස්ත්‍රීය ව්‍යායාමය හේතුවන බව පැවසිය හැකිය. බුදුරජාණන් වහන්සේ ධරමාන සමයෙහි ම බෞද්ධ පුද පූජාවන්හි සමාරම්භය සිදු වූ බව සාධක සහිතව මේ තුළින් ඔහු හෙළි කරයි.

කර්තෘගෙන් වචනයක්.....
ශ්‍රී විෂ්ණු, කතරගම, පත්තිනි, නාථ, විභීෂණ ආදී මහා දෙවිවරු පිළිබඳව කව්රුත් කතා කරති. ලියති. කියවති. නමුත් ලාංකීය දෙවිවරු කෙතෙක් ද?වැඩහිටි කන්දේ සිට බින් තැන්න, වෙල්ලස්ස, වැදිරට හරහා වැව් බැඳි රටට ගොස් දකුණු ලක හරහා නැවතත් වට වන්දනාවේ ගිය ගම් නියම්ගම් ගණන දන්නේ දෙපා පමණි. ඒ මහන්සිය නිසාවට " ඉපැරණි සිංහලේ ලාංකීය දෙවිදේවතාවෝ" ඔබ අතට ගෙන ඒමට හැකි විය. තමන් තනි තනිව සිටින දෙවිවරු ඇතත් ඒ පැත්තට පෑන නොමෙහෙයවුණි.දෙවියන් මිනිසාට වඳින බව සමහරු කියති. දෙවියන්ගෙන් වැඳුම් ගත හැකි එක "මනුස්ස පුලුටක්" ලක් පොළවේ සිටී දැයි ප්‍රශ්න නොකරමි. වසර දහස් ගණනක සිට දෙවියන් පිදූවන්ට සිදු වූ හානියක් ඇද්දැයි නොදනිමි. උගුරට හොරා බෙහෙත් නෑ නොහැක.මේ පොතට කරුණු සෙවීමේ දී උපකාරී වූ වැඩහිටි කන්දේ පූසාරි වශයෙන් දිවි ගෙවූ දිවංගත ශ්‍රී සංගරම් පිල්ලේ සාමිතුමා, දිවංගත බෝදාගම විජේනායක රාළහාමි ඇතුළු අය බොහෝ ය. නම් වශයෙන් ලිවීමට දිග වැඩිය. අපහසුය.මෙහි සඳහන් දේවනාම පිළිබඳ සැකයක්ද ඉපදෙනු ඇත. අපේ මුතුන්මිත්තන්ගේ විශ්වාසයට ගෞරව කරමු. මින් යමක් උගතහැකි නම් එය මා හට මහත් මානසික සුවයකි.කරුණු රැස් කිරීමේ දී පසුගිය පනස් වසර තුළ පොතපත ද, දන්නා දේ නොහඟවා කියා උපකාර කළ හැමද සාදරයෙන් සිහි කරමි.

දුටුගැමුණු මහ රජතුමා විසින් අනුරාධපුරයෙහි කරවන ලද රුවන් වැලි සෑය පිළිබඳ ඉතිහාසය පවසන ථුපවංශ' නම් වූ මේ ග්‍රන්ථය සකල විද්‍යාචක්‍රවර්ති පරාක්‍රම පණ්ඩිත නම් උගතෙකු විසින් රචනා කරන ලද්දකි.මේ පඬිවරයා හා බුත්සරණ කළ විද්‍යා චක්‍රවර්තීන් එක් කෙනෙක්ම යයි මීට කලකට පෙර අප අදහස වූ නමුත් ඒ අදහස වැරදි බව කියන්ට දැන් කරුණු තිබේ.බුත්සරණෙහි භාෂාව හා වෙනත් කරුණුත් පරික්ෂා කළ විට පෙනෙන්නේ එය පොළොන්නරු කාලයට අයත් ය යන බවය. ථූපවංශයෙහි සමහර තැන බුත්සරණින් ගෙන යෙදූ පාඨ තිබෙන නමුත් එය කුරුණෑගල කාලයට අයත් බව එහි තිබෙන ද්‍රවිඩ වචන බහුල වූ භාෂාවෙන් ඔප්පු වේ. මෙහි පෙනෙන ' මයිලඩි' ආදී සමහර ද්‍රවිඩ වචන අනික් සිංහල පොතක නැත්තේය.

Buddhist Monks And Monasteries Of India - Though India is no longer a Buddhist country, Buddhism held its place among Indian faiths for nearly seventeen centuries (500 B.C.-A.D. 1200). During this long stretch of time the Buddhist monks were organized in Sanghas in most parts of the country and their activities and achievements have profoundly influenced India`s traditional culture.
There are monumental remains of Buddhist monastic life scattered all over India: in the south there are about a thousand cave-monasteries, among them Ajanta, world-famous for its exquisite mural paintings; in the north, less spectacular, the ruins of monastic edifices from Taxila in the west to Paharpur in the east. A connected history of the Buddhist monks of ancient India, their activities, their monastic establishments and their contributions to Indian culture, is available for the first time in this work, which is remarkable also for its pervading human interest.
In reconstructing the history of the emperors and kings who were patrons of Buddhism, the early missionaries and the illustrious monk-scholars of later times, the author has used sources in four languages-Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese and Tibetan
